Itinerary Honors College

This is sample itinerary prepared for the 9th university group from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, USA. We can tailor-make your program according to your needs and expected outcomes.

The students are all members of the honors group, which is a broad-based undergraduate program. That is why the itinerary covers a wide spectrum of activities in South Africa.

Day 1

Meet your group at Cape Town airport    Typical South African welcome with Mission Vision Tour singers!    Light lunch – serve on the bus    Visit the New 7th Wonder of Nature, Table Mountain – cable car ride to the top    City drive through and Cape Town sightseeing    Drop off at hotel – V&A Waterfront hotel, Cape Town    Welcoming supper

Day 2

Robben Island on-site tour and District Six Museum visit    Preparations for next day’s research

Breakfast at your hotel    Leave hotel for Nelson Mandela Pier – Clock Tower V&A Waterfront    Boat to Robben Island – experiences with local tour guides    Meeting with Mr Christo Brand (the warder of Pres Nelson Mandela on Robben Island)    Lunch at the District 6 Museum Café    District Six Museum guided tour by Noor Abrahams    District Six on site community tour with local guides    Supper    Group starts preparations for next day’s research

Day 3

Research Project, town of Paarl, Western Cape

Interviews with local community members regarding the research questions    data collection

Day 4

Community Projects HELP Ministries    Visit Gugulethu- and Khayelitsha Townships

Meeting with staff and members of HELP Ministries – help with the preparation of food – information session Rev Cecile Begbie – visit schools – distribution of soup    Lunch Feeding of the homeless    Afternoon Visit black townships Gugulethu and Khayelitsha (tour guide Monwabisi Maqogi)    Golden, the Flowerman and Ekhaya Ekazi    Supper

Day 5

Morning conference    soccer match    African music and traditional meal

Breakfast at your hotel    Morning conference at the hotel: “Further on the Road to Freedom. South Africa’s Legacy of Leadership after 23 years?”    Speakers:

  • Mary Burton from the Truth- and Reconciliation Commission and Black Sash.
  • Michelle Boonzaaier
  • Alan Storey.

Lunch at the hotel    Drive to Qhiyia High School in Khayelitsha for soccer match    Principal and/or coach speak to the group. School visit    Show and supper at GOLD restaurant.

Day 6

Green Point Promenade Bicycle Experience    Simon’s Town, Penguins at the Boulders    Swim in the Indian Ocean    Cape Point Nature Reserve and Cape of Good Hope

Day 9

Sterkfontein Caves and Cradle of Humankind    Soweto Tour

Breakfast at Maropeng Hotel   Visits the Cradle of Humankind Museum and the Sterkfontein Caves    Lunch Robby’s Restaurant – Soweto    Soweto tour with our tour guide Queen Malefane.  We will stop at Regina Mundi Church, Hector Peterson Museum, visit Vilakazi Street where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu once lived and the FNB soccer stadium where the finals of the 2010 Soccer World Cup were played.    Return to Maropeng Hotel    Supper    Input: Political- and community leader    Overnight Maropeng Hotel
